A STORY THAT
BEGINS on BÜYÜKADA
An Island,
Long Beloved
The largest and most storied of the Princes’ Islands, Büyükada became Istanbul’s refuge, where Ottoman royalty, European travellers, poets and intellectuals came for its light and its way of life, often staying longer than planned. That feeling remains, in its avenues, along its waterfront and in a culture of hospitality that comes naturally to the island. Princes’ Palace Resort is part of what continues.

A Story in Time
It begins in 1872. A private waterfront residence, set along the Marmara Sea. By 1885, a grand seaside mansion had taken shape, designed by architect Perikles Fotiadis and brought to life by Yorgo Simota. In 1908, the estate passed to Mustafa Zeki Paşa, Chief of Artillery of the Ottoman Army, securing its place among the island’s most distinguished residences.
Decades later, in 1989, the mansion was recognised as a first-degree historic monument, becoming one of Büyükada’s most valuable cultural landmarks. Then, silence. Following the İzmit Earthquake in 1999, the structure was severely damaged and later lost to fire. What remained were traces. For more than two decades, the estate stood still.
Until it was
brought back to life.

A Family,
A Way of Living
The story of Princes’ Palace Resort is inseparable from that of the Akdağ family, whose influence has shaped both industry and cultural patronage in Türkiye. At its foundation is Dr. Eng. Erdoğan M. Akdağ, a pioneering entrepreneur whose vision extended beyond business into education, healthcare and cultural preservation through the Erdoğan Akdağ Educational Foundation. Together with his wife Serpil, he cultivated a life centred on art, hospitality and gathering, values that continue to define the resort today. In tribute, EMA’s Dining Room carries his initials, honouring his appreciation for refined dining and meaningful conversation.
